Telemetry and remote control: planning data, commands and communication

Telemetry makes it possible to track variables from equipment installed away from the operating team. Remote control adds the ability to send authorized commands. Both functions require careful design around actual equipment states, communication conditions and expected behavior when a link becomes unavailable or is restored. Monitoring and control requirements should be established separately before choosing the hardware.

Choose what to measure and command

Distinguish monitoring signals, alarms and commands in the assessment. For a pump, relevant information may include running status, fault conditions and process measurements. ABB describes RTUs that monitor equipment and enable remote control in electrical applications. When selecting a remote unit for another setting, check inputs, outputs, protocols, environmental conditions and compatibility with the devices to be connected, rather than assuming all remote units provide the same functionality.

Treat communication as part of the process

Define how data travels from field equipment to the supervisory system. Document networks, power sources, communication equipment and addressing. Every value needs identification and a time reference. If local storage is provided, explain which information will be recovered after an interruption. The dashboard should also indicate connection loss, allowing the team to distinguish confirmed current conditions from assumed or previously observed equipment states during an outage.

Validate commands and permissions

Sending a command does not prove that equipment performed the action. Specify confirmation through the appropriate state and retain local permissives and protection functions. Remote access needs authentication, defined profiles and action records appropriate to the system. Tests should include communication failure and restoration, unavailable power and switching between local and remote operation. The responsible team needs to understand these situations before the installation is handed over.

What to assess for your project

  • Separate measurements, alarms and commands.
  • Check networks, power and protocols.
  • Define confirmation and access permissions.
  • Test communication interruption and restoration.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help assess and deploy equipment telemetry and remote control, integrating sensors, PLCs or RTUs with the supervisory system. Scope can include connectivity, screens, historical records and command testing, with defined requirements for local operation, remote access and continuity of monitoring across the operating installation.
