Remote sensing: from a field measurement to usable operating data

A reading received over a network is useful only when the team knows what was measured, where, when and under which conditions. Remote sensing needs to connect a physical measurement point with the information used in operations. Planning begins with the variable of interest and the environment in which the sensor will be installed, rather than connectivity alone.

Select a measurement for the application

Temperature, level, pressure and flow require instruments and installation methods compatible with the process. Assess the measuring range and environmental conditions alongside power supplies, maintenance access and communication interfaces. Before specifying equipment, establish which decision the reading will support. That relationship guides measurement requirements, update frequency and the way unavailable readings are detected, giving the team a basis for comparing suitable instrument options and their installation needs.

Retain the meaning of the data

Sensor identification should remain consistent from the field to the database. Units, timestamps, scales and quality indications help interpret readings. The OPC Foundation PA-DIM specification defines an information model for representing and accessing process automation devices. This standardization principle reinforces the importance of context, including in projects using other protocols or equipment with different capabilities. The project should document that context wherever readings are stored or displayed.

Check the entire acquisition chain

Validation should follow the measurement through the instrument, acquisition device, transmission, storage and visualization. Comparison with an appropriate reference helps check readings against application criteria. Include disconnection, restart and configuration changes in testing. The team should also understand the instrument calibration or verification policy, where applicable, and the procedure for replacing a sensor while retaining traceability of its identification and the history associated with that measurement point.

What to assess for your project

  • Define the variable, purpose and environment.
  • Check range, interfaces and power.
  • Retain units, timestamps and quality.
  • Test acquisition and sensor replacement.
