LoRaWAN for farms and industry: choosing applications and planning coverage

A LoRaWAN network can support applications sending small amounts of data from distributed sensors. On farms and industrial sites, planning should begin with the variables to be monitored and the required update frequency. The selected technology needs to match the intended use, terrain and installation conditions. These requirements provide a basis for deciding whether a field pilot is appropriate.

Check whether the application fits

The LoRa Alliance describes LoRaWAN as an IoT communication technology focused on range and low power consumption. It also explains that the technology was not designed to carry large data volumes or provide real-time communication. Periodic level or environmental readings may be candidates for a project; continuous video and commands requiring deterministic timing need a different connectivity assessment. The application requirements should guide the decision, rather than range claims alone.

Assess coverage and field installation

Coverage should not be assumed from a generic distance. Terrain, vegetation, metal structures, antenna placement and conditions at individual points influence the link. Assess sensors, gateways and each gateway connection to the server. Field testing helps verify reception at actual installation positions and identify adjustments. Include power, physical protection and maintenance access in the project so the selected equipment can be supported throughout its intended operating conditions.

Integrate messages with operating systems

Transmitted readings need to be decoded and associated with the correct sensor, engineering unit and time reference. Define device registration, credential management and data destinations. A pilot can validate message behavior, communication failures and visualization in dashboards or supervisory systems. Estimate sensor battery life according to battery specifications, transmission frequency and operating conditions, without promising a universal duration. Document these assumptions so changes in reporting frequency can be assessed later.

What to assess for your project

  • Define variables and transmission frequency.
  • Test coverage at actual installation positions.
  • Check gateway power and server connectivity.
  • Validate message decoding and data integration.
