Translate operations into requirements
List users, terminals, routes and fixed locations. Separate coverage needs from capacity needs: many devices in the same area may require attention even when signal is present. Identify which applications will continue working locally during an external interruption.
Performance depends on the complete design, including radios, network core, transport, servers and devices. The 4G or 5G name does not replace application testing.
Integrate radio, core and systems
The architecture brings together the radio access network, mobile core and connections to local or external services. It may include processing close to operations, depending on requirements. Spectrum and equipment selection require technical assessment and consideration of requirements applicable to the project.
Plan addressing, segmentation, device identity and access to SCADA systems. Define how users and applications will be provisioned and how changes will be documented.
Validate and maintain the network
A pilot should represent movement, simultaneous traffic and field conditions. Measure end-to-end service delivery and record acceptance criteria. Commissioning also needs to verify alarms, backup power and recovery procedures.
After deployment, inventory, monitoring and configuration management help identify changes in demand and faults. Expansion should start with measurements of the existing network. Keep a record of terminal enrollment and network configuration, so maintenance staff can trace changes and reproduce a tested operating condition.
What to assess for your project
- Map applications and assets across the site.
- Validate terminal compatibility.
- Test services and contingencies during the pilot.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can help assess and design private LTE 4G and 5G networks for industrial, forestry and rural environments. A proposal can combine coverage planning, deployment, automation integration and monitoring, defining the operating scope and tests required before expansion.
