Networks and connectivity

Industrial Wi-Fi: coverage, mobility and system access

A tablet connected to a supervisory system needs to maintain communication throughout the work route, not just near the access point. In industrial environments, metal structures, machines and changing occupancy affect signal propagation and network quality.

Survey the environment and applications

A site survey evaluates radio-frequency behavior at the location. Planning brings together floor plans, obstacles, interference sources and equipment that will use the network. Document working areas and intended services, including HMI access, maintenance and personnel communications.

Also consider client numbers and simultaneous traffic. Visible signal does not prove sufficient capacity, application stability or operation while moving.

Design access and mobility

Antenna and access-point positioning, power and data transport should be defined together. Client-device characteristics matter too: antenna, software and roaming features influence the result. Tests should use the terminals that will actually be deployed.

Separate access according to function and limit communications with industrial systems to what is required. Plan user identities, credentials, updates and configuration records.

Check results in the field

After installation, validate coverage and applications along operational routes. Record disconnections, perceived delay, transfers between access points and performance under representative load. Define how the HMI reports a lost connection or old data.

The network needs monitoring and a review routine. Added structures, new equipment or more users may justify further measurements and adjustments. Keep a record of access-point locations and software versions so future troubleshooting starts from the installation that was actually validated.

What to assess for your project

  • Perform a radio-frequency site survey.
  • Test actual clients and working routes.
  • Verify access, mobility and simultaneous load.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help plan industrial Wi-Fi networks, from environmental assessment through deployment and integration with HMIs, SCADA and field devices. The project can include surveying, segmentation, mobility tests and monitoring, with documentation for maintenance and expansion of industrial connectivity.
