Let the data profile guide the choice
NB-IoT and LTE-M are cellular technologies for device communications. Data volume, reporting frequency, mobility and the need to receive commands all belong in the comparison. A conventional mobile coverage map alone does not confirm that the required IoT service is available.
Describe each message, its destination and how long the process can wait. This definition avoids selecting a module solely for its price or advertised battery life.
Measure battery life within the project
Consumption depends on sensors, modem, signal conditions, connection attempts and reporting schedules. Power-saving features must be compatible with both device and network; they also affect availability to receive messages. Validation should reproduce the intended operating pattern.
Before sizing the battery, test the final installation, including antenna, enclosure and periods of poor signal. Record consumption and recovery after interruptions.
Connect the sensor to the process
Connectivity delivers value when data arrives with identification, units, timestamps and quality information. A telemetry platform can organize historical records and alarms, while API integration transfers information to the system used by operations.
Specify how to recognize delayed data and how the device stores readings while disconnected. For field commands, define acknowledgement and local execution conditions. Keep a device inventory with firmware version, SIM identity and expected reporting pattern so later changes can be investigated consistently.
What to assess for your project
- Confirm network and module support.
- Test consumption at the intended reporting interval.
- Validate data, alarms and connection recovery.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can help assess NB-IoT and LTE-M for industrial IoT and rural telemetry, organize field trials and design sensor integration. Work can include device selection, communication deployment, APIs and dashboards, with acceptance criteria defined for the application.
