Define architecture and responsibilities
For the 5G system, TS 28.557 addresses non-public network management and distinguishes standalone models from models integrated with a public network. TS 23.501 describes the 5GS architecture. These references help discuss dependencies and management; they do not turn every private project into a mission critical deployment.
As a design recommendation, document who operates radio access, the core, power and applications. Decide where services need to work when external connectivity is unavailable. Equipment, versions and interfaces should be assessed together; an LTE network does not acquire every 5GS function simply by using dedicated infrastructure.
Plan coverage and capacity by scenario
In mining, the survey may consider moving work areas, roads and obstacles. In industry, structures and indoor areas require assessment. In forestry operations, terrain and team movement guide testing. These examples define the necessary assessment without establishing a universal range for base stations or a particular deployment.
Classify voice, video and data by operational need and expected volume. Assess simultaneous traffic, especially data sent by devices, and test mobility along actual routes. The recommendation is to record coverage and application experience under representative conditions before expanding the infrastructure across the operation.
Integrate with operational validation
Private networks can carry compatible applications, but PoC, SCADA and MCX services have different requirements. Network isolation and QoS mechanisms do not by themselves demonstrate compliance with mission critical standards. Implemented functions, policies and failure behavior need to be demonstrated within the scope being considered.
Include user management, monitoring, maintenance and operational alternatives in handover criteria. A pilot should check component outages and recovery alongside normal operation. Results should show observed limitations and support responsibilities, enabling a decision based on evidence from the actual environment rather than an assumed technology capability.
What to assess for your project
- Map applications, work areas and operational routes.
- Define dependencies, management and spectrum conditions.
- Test capacity, mobility and recovery.
- Document compatibility and deployment limitations.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can support private LTE and 5G network assessment, structure the architecture and evaluate communications and data integration. Subject to requirements, the project can include coverage, management and tests, with functions and performance criteria defined for each operation.
