Networks and connectivity

What is 3GPP and why does it matter for 4G LTE and 5G networks?

3GPP, the Third Generation Partnership Project, brings standards organizations together to develop cellular communication specifications. Its work underpins technologies such as LTE and 5G. Understanding this foundation helps businesses turn commercial terminology into questions about compatibility, infrastructure and operation.

A common foundation for networks and equipment

The specifications cover radio access, the network core and services. They provide technical references for developing components that need to work together. When comparing proposals, request the applicable specifications and the functions actually supported by the proposed combination.

Documents have versions organized into releases. A feature specified in a release must be implemented by the elements involved. Check models, software versions, frequency bands and support conditions; a commercial label identifying a cellular generation needs this verification.

Match LTE and 5G to application requirements

The 5G architecture addresses data connectivity and functions including mobility, authentication and quality of service control. Connect application requirements to the documented capabilities of the network and devices that will deliver the service.

Telemetry, video and remote access have different demands. Record data volumes, operating locations, movement and tolerance for interruptions. Assess how communication will connect to existing industrial systems and who will manage access permissions, updates and technical support.

Validate the solution in its operating environment

Survey coverage at operating locations, including indoor areas and routes used by field teams. Test the intended devices with representative traffic. Follow a demonstration with trials that reflect everyday conditions and the expected number of simultaneous users.

Define acceptance criteria for connecting, transferring data and recovering after failures. Document results and observed limitations. Confirm priority or quality of service features with those responsible for the infrastructure and contracted service, including any required configuration.

What to assess for your project

  • Match each application to its communication requirements.
  • Confirm equipment bands, versions and supported functions.
  • Test coverage and performance under representative load.
  • Record responsibilities, support arrangements and acceptance criteria.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can support industrial connectivity assessments, organize requirements for 4G LTE and 5G networks and evaluate integration options. The scope depends on available infrastructure, demonstrated capabilities and agreed tests.
