Solar power, fiber, radio and LTE for agricultural and forestry cameras

A field camera needs power and a path for delivering images. In agricultural and forestry areas, selecting these resources together avoids installing equipment that records locally but cannot support the intended analytics or viewing service.

Size power for the complete installation

Add consumption for the camera, radio or router, converters and accessories. Consider illumination, PTZ movement and higher-consumption modes according to documentation. Daily energy depends on power and operating time; system losses also belong in the calculation.

Panels, controller and battery should account for local solar resources, seasonal variation, usable capacity and desired reserve. Also assess recharge recovery after unfavorable periods. A panel with a high nominal power rating does not guarantee battery autonomy alone.

Select transport for the video stream

Fiber requires checking routes, infrastructure and interfaces. Radio links depend on assessment of sight lines, obstacles, Fresnel clearance and effective capacity. LTE requires service confirmation and testing at the location, particularly data upload from the camera to the platform.

Estimate traffic using the resolution, frame rate, compression and number of streams actually used. Dynamic scenes can change bitrate. Restricting bitrate to fit a link may remove important details, requiring analytics validation again.

Plan interruptions and monitoring

Define what happens when power or communications fail. Local recording can preserve evidence when supported and configured, but does not automatically keep remote alerts available. Check retransmission support and how the platform reports delayed images or events.

Monitor power, link status and the last video update. Test recovery, consumption and transmission before expansion, recording operating conditions and limitations of the installed location.

What to assess for your project

  • Measure consumption of the complete field point.
  • Size generation, battery and recharge recovery.
  • Test upload and video under representative load.
  • Validate interruptions, records and availability alarms.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can assess power and connectivity for agricultural and forestry cameras according to installation locations and planned services. A project may combine fiber, radio, LTE and solar power, with video tests, platform integration and availability criteria defined from the survey.
