Network slicing in 5G: what it is and how it can serve business applications

Sensors, video and operational communications can share mobile infrastructure while having different needs. Network slicing organizes logical networks with specific characteristics within the 5G system. Its value for a business depends on available services and on how the architecture is deployed and monitored.

A logical network with a purpose

TS 23.501 defines a network slice as a logical network with specific capabilities and characteristics. One business application may need a different profile from another, even when both use the same physical infrastructure.

Planning should start with tasks: transmitting periodic measurements, viewing images or maintaining voice sessions. Identify users, mobility, coverage and concurrent traffic before proposing which services will be associated with each slice in the intended deployment.

Separation depends on implementation

Creating a slice does not by itself guarantee complete isolation, reserved capacity or an SLA. The project needs to explain shared resources, quality of service policies and the limits considered across radio, core, transport and applications.

TS 28.530 relates service requirements to management and performance monitoring. For procurement, we recommend stating metrics, measurement conditions and responsibilities explicitly. The name of the functionality does not replace this technical agreement between the parties.

Validate the service end to end

A pilot should use representative terminals and applications. Test concurrent traffic, movement and interruptions under the approved scenario, checking both the connection and the experience the user observes while performing the actual task the service must support.

Record versions, configuration and test conditions. Before expanding, confirm support in the network, devices and contracted provisioning. Changes in load or application may require a review of policies and system sizing rather than assuming the earlier configuration remains appropriate.

What to assess for your project

  • Map applications and their different requirements.
  • Identify shared resources and limits.
  • Define service metrics and responsibilities.
  • Test representative terminals and traffic.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help gather business requirements, assess the available 5G architecture and structure application tests. When technical and commercial support for network slicing is available, the scope can include integration and monitoring, with documented assumptions, limits and acceptance criteria for the proposed service.
