PoC and MCPTT: what are the differences in professional communications?

Pressing a button to speak to a team does not, by itself, define a mission critical service. PoC and MCPTT can offer a similar user experience, but selection must consider technical requirements, implementation evidence and the actual conditions of the operation.

What the PoC name tells you

PoC, or push-to-talk over cellular, describes PTT communication carried over cellular connectivity. A commercial offering may include voice groups and other features, but each platform requires individual assessment. The PoC name does not demonstrate MCPTT conformance.

In a quotation, identify the application, server, licensing, devices and connectivity required. Describe who needs to talk to whom, which areas will be served and how operations will continue during an outage. This supports comparison based on the service actually delivered.

What changes with MCPTT

MCPTT is a mission critical push-to-talk service specified by 3GPP. Assessing it requires verification of applicable requirements and protocols, rather than associating the classification with a device's shape, the presence of a PTT button or a commercial label.

Priority within an application does not ensure priority on the mobile network. Traffic treatment depends on infrastructure, policies and agreements with the operator or network owner. Using a smartphone or a 5G network does not remove this dependency.

How to compare using evidence

Request the specifications, versions, Releases and functions actually implemented. Ask for test reports covering the proposed client and server combination; a feature advertised in a catalogue needs demonstration in the intended environment.

Protocol conformance tests have a defined scope and do not replace validation of coverage, load and operational continuity. For procurement, turn the team's scenarios into verifiable acceptance criteria and record the limitations identified.

What to assess for your project

  • Separate the commercial PoC classification from demonstrated MCPTT conformance.
  • Check versions, functions, devices and test reports.
  • Confirm traffic treatment with the operator or network owner.
  • Test coverage, load, failures and contingency procedures.

How COM3 can help

After assessing the scope, COM3 may support a professional communications review, compare PoC alternatives against MCPTT requirements and plan integration tests. Solution selection should depend on the diagnosis, supplier evidence and network feasibility.
