MCX: understanding voice, video and data integration in critical communications

During an incident, a team may need to talk, show a situation and transmit supporting information. MCX brings together the context of 3GPP standardized mission critical services for voice, video and data. A project must define how these resources will be used and validated.

Three services, different needs

MCPTT addresses mission critical push-to-talk; MCVideo addresses video; and MCData addresses data. The common architecture includes functions such as group, identity and configuration management, but each service has its own specifications and requires verification in the proposed solution.

As a planning example, a team could maintain voice communication while sending an image of an area for assessment. Before adopting that workflow, establish who starts the transmission, who receives the information and what confirmation operations require.

Integration requires networks and governance

Create an inventory of the clients, servers, consoles and interfaces involved. Define permissions by role and responsibilities for registering, updating and removing users. Access design should reflect the everyday work of internal teams and contractors.

Estimate traffic demand for each scenario and particularly validate field video upload conditions. Establish criteria for evaluating voice during simultaneous sessions, including congestion and loss of connectivity. Priority depends on implementation and network agreements.

Interoperability needs evidence

Request a matrix of the versions, Releases, functions and interfaces supported by each component. Plan tests between the combinations that will actually be used, with acceptance criteria for delivery, permissions, fault recovery and console operation.

ETSI MCX Plugtests assess interoperability between implementations. The tenth event's report states that it did not certify products or vendors. Participation, inclusion in a table or an aggregate result does not demonstrate every function of a particular commercial solution.

What to assess for your project

  • Define voice, video and data workflows for each operational scenario.
  • Check versions and interfaces of each client, server and console.
  • Validate concurrent load, coverage and traffic treatment agreements.
  • Document permissions, tests, results and integration limitations.

How COM3 can help

Depending on the diagnosis and feasibility, COM3 may support requirements assessment for MCX and integration reviews for critical communications. Work may include scenario design and test criteria, subject to demonstrated capabilities of the components and infrastructure.
