Measure where failures occur
Level sensors show conditions in tanks and troughs; flow meters help track distribution; electrical signals indicate pump operation. Before choosing instruments, draw the water network and identify critical points. The design recommendation is to combine complementary measurements, because level, flow and pump status answer different questions about supply. Installation should also allow access for inspection and sensor replacement without unnecessarily disrupting watering.
Turn readings into useful notifications
A sustained fall in level can notify the team, while an unexpected rise in flow calls for a leak inspection. Rules need to reflect livestock routines, normal replenishment and trough cleaning. Recording the last communication from every sensor prevents an old reading from appearing to represent current conditions. The dashboard should also show battery status, communication failures and alarms that still require attention from a named operator.
Connect without disrupting field routines
LoRaWAN, cellular networks and local wireless links should be evaluated against terrain, distances and available power. A small pilot helps check installation, battery life and maintenance before expansion. Telemetry alone does not establish water hygiene: inspection, cleaning and appropriate testing remain necessary. Manual pump operation and safety limits for remote commands should also be included, particularly when the communication link becomes unavailable.
What to assess for your project
- Map water sources, tanks and consumption points.
- Test sensors and communication in the field.
- Assign alarm owners and practical response criteria.
- Document cleaning, inspection and manual operation.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can help assess the water supply network, specify level and flow sensors and integrate rural telemetry into operational dashboards. The project can bring together alarms, historical records and connectivity, with field validation and a maintenance plan suited to the farm.
