Connected weather stations: local data for operations

Rain, wind, temperature and humidity help explain conditions across a production area. A connected weather station brings local observations into operational systems, but data usefulness depends on measurement, installation and maintenance.

Define the station’s purpose

Before choosing sensors, identify the decisions that observations should support. Irrigation management, environmental monitoring and activity planning may require different variables and intervals. The station records conditions at its location; its representativeness for other areas must be assessed.

Document instrument location, height and surroundings. Shadows, obstacles and changes near the installation can influence readings and need to be considered when interpreting historical records.

Manage quality from collection onwards

Instruments, installation and procedures should suit the observed variable. Cleaning, inspection and metrological verification belong in the routine; a transmitting sensor does not necessarily mean a valid measurement. Record interventions and changes to track quality over time.

The system should preserve units, timestamps and station identification. Flag faults, gaps and questionable readings, avoiding filling periods without data as if they were actual observations.

Integrate observations with applications

Connectivity can transfer data to dashboards, historical records and supporting tools. Local storage and retransmission after interruptions should be assessed according to equipment capabilities. Communication alarms need to be separated from alerts associated with environmental variables.

A station does not, by itself, replace weather forecasting or specialist assessment. Its integration should support criteria defined by the technical team, allowing comparison of local conditions and recording the context of decisions made. Keep a station and sensor register so changes in instruments can be related to variations noticed in the historical record.

What to assess for your project

  • Define variables and intended uses.
  • Assess location and point representativeness.
  • Document maintenance and data quality.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help assess and design connected weather stations for rural areas and industrial installations, integrating sensors, telemetry and databases. Deployment can include communications, dashboards and alarms, with quality criteria and maintenance routines defined with the team that will use the information.
