Select measurement for the environment
Instrument selection considers fluid, measurement range, temperature, installation and maintenance. Different technologies exist for each quantity; the appropriate solution depends on conditions at the point. A sensor outside its range or incorrectly installed may produce plausible-looking information that does not represent the process.
Record units, scale, identification and reference for every measurement. When converting level to volume, check tank geometry and the relationship used by the system.
Integrate without losing data meaning
The controller and platform must correctly interpret signals and protocols. Integration should preserve timestamps and quality states as well as values. Communication failure, disconnected sensors and out-of-range values require different indications.
Alarms need limits defined for the process, with handling of fluctuations and persistence time where appropriate. Avoid turning every variation into a notification the team cannot address.
Check trends and totalization
Historical records help relate consumption, pumping and storage. A pressure drop associated with changing flow can guide an investigation, but diagnosis requires checking the installation and other conditions. Compare periods and record configuration changes.
Where values are totalized, define reset behavior, retention and gap handling. During commissioning, compare measurements with appropriate references and test data presentation on the operational screen. Name each instrument consistently in drawings, controller configuration and operating screens, allowing technicians to trace a reading back to its physical location.
What to assess for your project
- Define quantities, units and operating ranges.
- Validate installation and signal quality.
- Check alarms, historical records and totalizers.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can help assess measurement locations and design level, flow and pressure monitoring using instrumentation, telemetry and supervisory systems. Deployment can bring together sensors, controllers, dashboards and historical data, validating signals and alarm criteria with the operations team.
