API integration: connecting industrial operations with business systems

A temperature appears in SCADA, an order sits in a business system, and closing the shift depends on spreadsheets. API integration can bring these records together when the project defines what each piece of information means and who may use it.

Start with the information flow

Before selecting connectors, describe a specific use case: linking energy consumption to a production order, for example. Identify the source, destination, unit, timestamp and data owner. A business API and an industrial interface serve different purposes. OPC UA provides interoperability and information modeling capabilities; using it depends on the functions available in the equipment and applications involved in the proposed connection.

Make failures part of the design

The integration proposal should explain what happens when the destination becomes unavailable. Depending on the application, we can plan queues, controlled retries and record identifiers to avoid duplicates. Distinguishing missing data from a zero value is also useful. In a carbonization example, linking measurements to the kiln and cycle makes the context available without requiring isolated interpretation of each number during the daily review.

Validate permissions and results

We recommend starting with data reading and adding commands only when there is an operational reason. Service accounts need permissions proportionate to the approved flow. An acceptance test can follow a record from its source to the final report, including connection interruption and recovery. The team should be able to identify errors and understand who maintains each interface after application versions change.

What to assess for your project

  • Map systems, data owners and required information.
  • Define common units, timestamps and identifiers.
  • Test unavailability, duplicates and recovery.
  • Document permissions and acceptance criteria.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help assess existing interfaces, design API integration and connect SCADA, databases and business systems within the approved scope. The work can include implementation, testing and documentation so the team can monitor the information flow clearly and understand the responsibilities assigned to each connected system.
