Production dashboards: indicators that guide everyday work

A production dashboard should help answer a question, as well as fill a screen. Understanding which cycles are delayed, which assets need attention and where unusual consumption occurred requires clearly defined indicators and data that the team can check against the underlying records.

Choose the decision before the chart

We recommend discussing shift decisions with operations, maintenance and management. An operator may need the current equipment state; a manager may need comparisons across periods. Record the formula, unit, source and limitations of each indicator. In a hypothetical carbonization example, cycle duration becomes comparable only when the start and end stages are defined consistently for all the kilns included in the analysis.

Display context and data quality

The dashboard should display the selected period and help users locate the corresponding asset or batch. We prefer to highlight missing data and update times so an old measurement does not appear current. Elipse E3 documentation describes reporting capabilities for instantaneous values and stored data. Choosing a report, trend or dashboard depends on how the user needs to monitor and verify the information.

Test with the people who will use it

A prototype with a few screens can reveal questions before full implementation. Propose real tasks, such as finding the source of a stoppage or comparing two weeks. Check whether filters are clear, colors have labels and a summarized number opens its details. Acceptance should compare each indicator with known records and assign someone to maintain calculation rules as the application develops over time.

What to assess for your project

  • Link every indicator to a decision.
  • Document formulas, time periods and sources.
  • Highlight missing data and update times.
  • Validate filters and results with users.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help assess information sources, define operational indicators and develop production dashboards integrated with existing systems. The project can include prototypes, queries and calculation tests, with a focus on interpreting results and supporting the daily work of operations and management teams through clear, documented information.
