Integrating DMR radios and LTE platforms: possibilities and challenges

Teams using DMR radios and users connected through LTE may need to share the same communication. Integration possibilities depend on the systems involved. LTE provides connectivity; the communication platform, its interfaces and the DMR infrastructure determine which functions can cross the connection between the systems.

Identify the interface on each side

The DMR Association presents AIS as an interface between DMR infrastructure and applications. Its existence does not demonstrate support in every product. The survey should identify available interfaces, documentation, licenses and versions of the equipment actually in use.

Integration may use a gateway or an interface supported by the suppliers. Define what will be transferred: audio, identities, groups or other capabilities. An audio bridge does not prove complete integration of data, priority and emergency functions.

Assess MCX and IWF within their scope

TS 23.283 addresses interworking between mission critical systems and LMR through an IWF. The specification defines interfaces on the MC side and leaves the internal functionality of the IWF outside its stated scope of implementation.

This reference therefore does not establish a universal DMR adapter. For an MCX proposal, request the implemented mapping and the capabilities supported in both networks. Also assess how identities, floor control and audio protection are handled across the connection.

Test conversations and exceptions

We recommend a pilot with terminals on both sides, checking audio in both directions, the start and end of talk transmission and group association. Additional capabilities need their own tests, with clearly recorded criteria and limitations.

Observe concurrent calls, connection loss and recovery. Confirm priority and security behavior within the scope rather than assuming that all radio functions continue across the integration. Document the operational alternative when the connection between systems is unavailable.

What to assess for your project

  • Survey interfaces, versions and licenses.
  • Define capabilities that cross the integration.
  • Verify mappings, security and priorities.
  • Test audio, groups, failures and recovery.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help assess DMR infrastructure, evaluate platforms using LTE and organize an integration pilot. Depending on documented compatibility, the project can include gateways, configuration and tests, specifying available capabilities, limits and the responsibilities assigned to every component within the proposed solution and its support arrangements.
