Charcoal production management: indicators with operational context

Charcoal production management needs to bring together planned work, current operations and completed output. Records must therefore use concepts shared by operations and management. A useful dashboard shows reliable information while making it clear where gaps still exist and which records require additional attention from the team.

Plan around the actual state of resources

A production view can track available kilns, active cycles, scheduled activities and recorded constraints. It is important to distinguish a completed stage from a forecast. Scheduling should account for actual facility conditions and the information supplied by the operating team.

Define unavailability reasons that people can use consistently. Maintenance, missing information and waiting for an activity are different conditions. Classification helps identify areas requiring investigation, without turning the indicator into an automatic conclusion about the underlying cause of the recorded event.

Connect volume, mass and quality

Production records need to state the measurement unit and how each value was obtained. Mass and volume should not be added or converted without a documented rule. Where weighing is available, identify the equipment and the record associated with the corresponding batch.

SIF identifies moisture, particle size, density and fixed carbon among quality parameters relevant to ironmaking. In the management system, test results should be linked to the batch with their date and method, keeping a clear distinction between inspected results and estimated information.

Establish a routine for analysis and correction

Choose indicators that answer the facility's questions, such as record availability, schedule completion and output per cycle. Define the calculation and the owner of each data source. Regular reviews can examine exceptions and decide which occurrences need further investigation by the team.

Integration with inventory and administrative systems should prevent duplicate entries. Keep a defined source for each value and clear update rules. Before expanding the dashboard, validate queries with users: indicators help only when everyone understands what is actually being measured.

What to assess for your project

  • Define kiln states and scheduling criteria.
  • Standardize units and production record sources.
  • Link quality, inventory and produced batches.
  • Document calculations and indicator ownership.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can connect charcoal production management, kiln data and quality records through supervisory systems, databases and APIs. The assessment supports the development of production indicators and integrations that fit the processes already used by the facility and its operating teams.
