Gas burner automation: integrating the charcoal production process

Integrating gas burners into a charcoal production facility involves specific equipment, instrumentation and procedures. The project must assess the entire arrangement, from the kilns to gas treatment. Automating a panel without understanding those relationships can leave important technical and operational requirements outside the agreed project scope.

Understand the complete system

SIF describes a kiln and combustion chamber system in which ducts connect kilns to a burner. This relationship makes it important to assess the facility arrangement and the different operating conditions of its connected equipment. The assessment should start from the installation that actually exists.

Record drawings, actuators, measurement points and maintenance responsibilities. Identify which information is supplied by the manufacturer and which requires local verification. Process changes must consider the complete set of equipment rather than focusing only on the controller's programmed logic.

Define functions and permissive conditions

The automation architecture should clarify the role of each measurement, command and status signal. Responsible engineers need to specify permissives and interlocks based on the equipment and process assessment. The supervisory system should present those conditions in a way operators can understand.

Protective functions must follow the technical solution defined for the application; a SCADA screen does not replace safety devices or functions required by the design. Tests should check instrument failures, communication interruptions and the expected behavior at each system interface.

Record operation to support improvement

Historical records can bring together states, events, unavailability and selected measurements. Records should identify which equipment was operating and connect events to the corresponding cycle. This helps the team investigate occurrences using one consistent time reference across the relevant systems.

Potential energy recovery or emissions assessment requires its own measurements and methodology. Automation alone does not justify claims of reductions without evidence. Reports should distinguish measured data, estimates and manually entered information, providing a clear basis for subsequent engineering decisions.

What to assess for your project

  • Survey the arrangement of kilns, ducts and burner.
  • Review equipment interfaces and documentation.
  • Validate permissives, protection and failure tests.
  • Define records and methods for assessing results.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can support gas burner automation engineering by integrating instrumentation, PLCs and supervision after an assessment. The scope should account for the charcoal production system, equipment interfaces and functions specified by the team responsible for the process.
