Relate field of view to detail
Focal length, together with the sensor, influences field of view. A wider image spreads pixels across a larger area; a narrow view concentrates detail on part of the scene. More megapixels alone do not resolve this choice.
Define regions of interest on the ground and check their size in the image delivered to the platform. The stream used by analytics may have a different resolution from recording or operator viewing.
Check focus, light and processing
The lens should maintain focus on the observed plane, and lighting conditions need checking at different times. Backlighting, high gain and compression can alter useful detail. Test the final video configuration, including the frame rate required by the software.
Near-infrared illumination, common in night cameras, is not thermal imaging. A thermal sensor uses a different infrared band; IR LEDs do not turn an ordinary bullet camera into a heat detector.
Validate framing during agricultural operations
Record images during wind, machinery operations and seasonal vegetation changes. A varifocal lens helps adjustment but does not remove obstacles or missing detail. Preserve the approved framing and document subsequent changes.
Before purchasing multiple units, compare cameras with the same purpose and similar conditions. Selection should consider cleaning, access, mounting and network capacity alongside images obtained during the test.
What to assess for your project
- Define regions of interest on the ground.
- Compare field of view and useful detail.
- Test the stream actually used by analytics.
- Distinguish IR illumination from thermal sensors.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can assess resolution, lenses and field of view for agricultural bullet cameras according to the area’s objectives. A project may include surveys, image tests, networking and platform integration, with equipment selection conditional on observed results.
