Industrial automation: turning data into operational decisions

An industrial automation project starts with a practical question: which decision needs better information? Measuring a variable, executing a sequence and monitoring a machine are different requirements. Establishing these priorities helps teams avoid buying technology before defining the process behavior they actually need.

Understand the process before selecting equipment

An assessment should identify machines, electrical panels, instruments, responsibilities and operating conditions. For each signal, record its source, unit, expected range and importance. It is also necessary to understand which actions depend on an operator and which are already performed by local controllers.

A useful specification connects observed problems to functions that can be checked: displaying a fault, recording a stop or allowing an authorized command. This work guides the selection of PLCs, communication interfaces and network infrastructure for the installation.

Connect control, supervision and information

The PLC executes the logic defined for the equipment. The HMI presents the commands and states required by the operator. SCADA extends visibility and can bring together alarms, trends and historical records. These layers should use consistent names, engineering units and update rules.

Integration must also account for missing data, instruments under maintenance and communication failures. A screen needs to distinguish a valid reading from an old value. Access permissions and change records help establish who performed each action and when it happened.

Deploy against clear acceptance criteria

A phased implementation allows the team to validate a representative machine or area first. Tests should cover signals, commands, alarms, power loss and communication recovery. Operator involvement reveals practical needs that an architecture drawing cannot identify on its own.

Documentation, backups and training are part of the delivery. After commissioning, follow the indicators defined during assessment to determine whether the solution meets its objectives. When the process changes, both the control logic and the measurement criteria need review.

What to assess for your project

  • Inventory existing instruments, PLCs and networks.
  • Define functions, permissions and responsibilities.
  • Document tests and fault recovery.
  • Compare indicators before and after implementation.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can assess the infrastructure, develop the industrial automation project and integrate PLCs, HMI and SCADA according to the findings. The scope can include instrumentation, industrial networks and historical records, with acceptance criteria defined around the actual requirements of each facility.
