Assess before replacing
The assessment brings together electrical drawings, available programs, motor and drive characteristics, sensors and operating modes. It also records recurring faults and maintenance limitations. In its approach to drive retrofits, ABB describes reusing certain existing elements when compatible. That possibility must be checked for each installation: keeping an enclosure or motor requires assessing its physical condition, electrical characteristics and suitability for the proposed equipment and operating conditions.
Define stages and acceptance criteria
The project should identify what will be retained, adapted and replaced. Communication interfaces, field signals, power supplies and protection devices belong in the scope. An implementation sequence helps organize maintenance windows and responsibilities. Before the intervention, define how functions will be tested: starting, stopping, permissives, alarms, manual and automatic modes and communication with the supervisory system. Written acceptance criteria make the handover verifiable for everyone involved.
Deliver a maintainable installation
After the retrofit, the team needs updated drawings, cable and terminal identification, program backups and operating instructions. Validation should involve maintenance personnel and machine users. Deviations found during testing must be corrected and documented. A follow-up plan makes it possible to compare conditions before and after the project using indicators selected by operations, without assuming energy savings or production increases before measurements have been collected and reviewed.
What to assess for your project
- Inventory existing components and programs.
- Define scope, downtime and acceptance tests.
- Update drawings and backup copies.
- Guide operations and maintenance after handover.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can help assess, design and implement retrofits for industrial machinery and facilities, integrating PLCs, drives and supervisory systems according to the identified requirements. The work can include documentation, testing and transition planning, with objectives agreed with the team responsible for the process.
