Define priority and action
We recommend reviewing each condition with the operations team: what changed, what the consequence is and what someone should do. In a reservoir example, a low level and a lost connection require different interpretations. OPC UA alarm and condition representation helps organize exchange between systems. The operational response still needs to be developed for the specific process and approved by the people responsible.
Distinguish detection from notification
SCADA can record a condition even when an external notification channel is unavailable. The proposal should explain which channels are used, whether receipt is confirmed and how escalation works when the first contact does not respond. We recommend messages containing the asset, timestamp, state and brief guidance. Loss of the communication channel should be visible so an absence of messages is not interpreted as an absence of incidents.
Review noise and traceability
During a pilot, examine repeated events, notices without a defined action and conditions that appear during planned shutdowns. Adjustments should be recorded and validated with the team without concealing process risks. Acknowledging an alarm does not remove its cause. History should reconstruct the sequence, including acknowledgment and return to normal. Notifications complement operations and do not replace instrumented protection and safety functions in the installation.
What to assess for your project
- Assign a priority and action to each condition.
- Define owners and escalation paths.
- Test unavailable channels and recovery.
- Record acknowledgment, changes and closure.

How COM3 can help
COM3 can help assess existing alarms, organize critical events and integrate notifications with SCADA and dashboards. The scope can include message reviews, history and escalation tests, aligning implemented functions with the procedures and responsibilities defined by the operation and making the response workflow easier for the team to follow.
