PoC communications: connect radios, phones and distributed teams

A team inside the factory and another traveling between sites may need to join the same conversation. PoC communications use data connectivity to carry Push-to-Talk calls and can bring together dedicated terminals and compatible applications. The project should assess the platform, coverage and requirements of each group of users before choosing equipment.

Understand network dependency

Cellular networks and Wi-Fi can carry PoC communications, depending on the selected solution. Signal coverage alone does not establish a good voice experience: availability, latency and packet loss also need assessment. The design recommendation is to test routes, indoor areas and busy periods. Define what happens when a terminal loses data service and which operational communication alternative will be used under those conditions.

Integrate with verifiable criteria

Professional radio and broadband convergence is possible in specific solutions, as Hytera documentation describes. That does not mean automatic compatibility between any radio, application and platform. Gateways, licenses, protocols and configuration may be required. An integration test should assess audio in both directions, identification, talkgroups, call timing and behavior during failures, while preserving the organization of the existing network and its users.

Manage users and functions

Management should include registration, permissions and access revocation for lost terminals or users leaving the organization. Location, video and recording depend on the platform, equipment and contracted scope. These data need defined purposes and access roles. Charging, accessories and training should also be standardized so terminal availability matches actual operational needs. Routine checks can help identify issues before devices are assigned to a shift.

What to assess for your project

  • Test data and voice at actual use locations.
  • Validate compatible devices and platforms.
  • Define groups, permissions and communication alternatives.
  • Document integration and failure handling.

How COM3 can help

COM3 can help assess PoC communications and radio-to-phone integration, define an architecture and organize field tests. The project can bring together terminals, applications and operational dispatch, with functions and connectivity selected according to team requirements and validated operating conditions.
